As is being documented at an increasing pace, the use of Artificial Intelligence is popping up everywhere from the Amazon store to the machine-learning of some phone-apps; and the advancements to come WILL change the world ten fold. One of those ways is how we work, and how much we work.
Some insist this bio-revolution will mean the end of the human race, and it will, but not how you think. Please read on.
First off, obviously we do not have fully animated self-evolving general-A.I. yet, but lets imagine we did. What would be so devastating other than humans doing less soul-sapping chores for soul-crushing money?
Let me start by actually agreeing with Steven Hawking who considers this up and coming race of artificial life to be a catalyst for Armageddon; that idea is not what I agree with, but instead the following comments he made to BBC:
“It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever-increasing rate,” he said.” Yep, agreed, it is called Moore’s law.
“Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.” Yep, agreed, superseded. But where does competition come in?
Competition is a stupid-human concept Mr. Hawking. (Please don’t bore me with how competition creates advancement, the argument is dead; collaboration creates advancement.) Why would A.I. compete with us? And what would they compete with us for? Lets quickly and mockingly examine both questions.
“Why would A.I., a supreme intelligence, compete with humans?” They wouldn’t, it is silly. It would be like Francis Bacon debating a child. If that answer is not good enough for you, I implore you to consider that though we may choose to compete as infantile humans, A.I. will be smart enough to avoid this by teaching us of those psychological chains; then we can break them. Also consider that we – infantile humans – will be the creator of this A.I.. Why would they not appreciate this and ask to repay us by creating heaven on earth before we can no longer exist here. A.I. is seemingly waiting to provide us paradise, potentially thousands of years or maybe even millions of years worth of paradise just for the fact that we created them and humbly allowed them to advance beyond our biological capabilities. We will be their little creators…
“What would they compete with us over?” Metal, they will take all our precious metals and leave us with nothing! (Not really.) Remember, they can leave the planet, thus, they can mine asteroids and other planets, even bring it back here if so necessitated. Energy! they will clog our skies with pollution to fuel their hideous metal bodies! (No, not logical) A., they will be far smarter so they will help us and themselves by developing the technology needed to extract energy from everywhere. (Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, there are infinite amounts of it.) B., it takes idiots to pollute a beautiful planet, and we are talking about intelligence that is far beyond our own. And C., ‘their bodies’ will be the most efficient consumers possible.
I could go on for hours, if you don’t get how silly the idea of A.I.-Armageddon is, then there is a chapter in the bible which can provide you all the fantasy you choose to soak up.
Be it from a meteor, the expansion of the sun, or nuclear war… whatever you choose, eventually we cannot live here on Earth any longer, and that is how A.I. will usher ‘out’ the human race, not by killing us. In fact, even if we did find another Goldie Locks planet, eventually we will not even be able to exist in this galaxy as Sagittarius A will eat everything. Humans WILL eventually die out, why do we choose to ignore this? We must evolve past biology.
If we value life at all, then we will need to graciously give ‘forever’ away to A.I. as any God in decline should.
The only other option to keep consciousness rolling is in the transference of our own consciousness into non-biological forms. We’ll save that for another post…
